Ever wondered if you could trademark your catchy slogan, just like you do with your logo and business name?
Yep! You totally can!
But here’s the deal, just like the usual requirements for a trademark, a slogan must meet the three main criteria below to be eligible for registration:
1. Having Distinctive Character
The rule of thumb is to always invent your own slogan. Don’t just make minor tweaks to someone else’s. Aim for a slogan or words that traders in your industry would not typically use in their day-to-day operations.
2. Not Describing the Products and Services
Don’t give the game away. The slogan should not, in anyway, describe your products and services, at least not directly. It’s even better if people can read your slogan and not know what you are selling without seeing your products. Keep it mysterious! Like Nike’s Just Do It! Not a clue about sneakers or sports gear, right?
3. Not similar to Others Slogans
As expected, your slogan should not be similar to others’, whether by its looks or sound.
Slogan is also essential part of a branding strategy. It works well in conveying the underlying message your branding identity.
